Interruptions are your worst enemies while at work. The work is a process. It needs concentration and an environment to start and end with. The real problems in a work environment are M&M. Managers and Meetings and this is why things are not done in modern office environment today.
Managers are for interrupting people and not letting them work on what they are paid for. And meetings are just toxic, terrible, poisonous thing during the work day that keep interrupting your actual work. The one hour meeting of 10 persons is a 10 hour meeting. What could be the solution:

  • How about no-talk Thursdays. NO meeting today 🙂 Just silence day. No body will talk to nobody but will do work. And finally you will find out that lots of work has been done.
  • Switch from active communication (face 2 face) to passive communication: instant messaging, email, collaborative tools.
  • Cancel all the unwanted, un-necessary meetings. If you can and concentrate more on work.

Jason Fried of basecamp has a radical theory of working: that the office isn’t a good place to do it. In his talk, he lays out the main problems (call them the M&Ms) and offers three suggestions to make work work.
